Twins vs. Rangers

Home Team Wins

I

t was a fair Texas day, mostly sunny with a nice breeze to balance the humidity. The air had a familiarity to it, somehow reminiscent of

Gophers.  As the University of Minnesota Alumni Association - North Texas Chapter descended upon the Ballpark in Arlington, there was excitement amongst all 45 Alums who signed up for the festivities. At 7:05 P.M., the game between the Minnesota Twins and the Texas Rangers was scheduled to start. Many of us were looking forward to this Monday, August 23rd of 2004 for that very reason.

I

n the mean time, there was much to captivate and entertain us. Thanks to the Alumni Association, and specifically to Mary Davis and Mark Allen. They sent us a goodie box that was loaded with Gopher and "M" gems and other desirables. Included was a signed baseball by Terry Steinbach, a U of M Alum who retired as a member of the Minnesota Twins.

We raffled this off, and mythology has it that the bearer of this ball is not to have any curveballs in life. Let us know if it is true!?!? We also held a 50/50 raffle. Thomas Jacobowski is the lucky person who walked away with $52.00 in cash. The other half is earmarked for the North Texas Chapter scholarship fund. Thomas, keep us in mind when you write your will! A bobble head Gopher dressed in a baseball uniform was also raffled off. All of us ate chicken for dinner, recipe by the Colonel.

fter the preliminary activities, we proceeded into the ballpark to watch the Twins play the Rangers at Texas. With seats in the second tier near third base, we were able to have a prime view of the game. It was appropriately noted by the Ballpark's message board that the University of Minnesota Alumni Association was in attendance as a group. For

the game itself, there were several innings that absolutely held the attention of everyone. There were as many as a total of four runs in one inning. Talk about drama and excitement!! For those who did not catch the final score:  Twins 7, Rangers 4.

L

ast, but not least, I want to thank the following people for volunteering to help with the activities during our outing. There is no particular order: Bradley Carroll, Christa Emerson, Jan Rollow, Larry Katzung, and Neal Nelson. Without their help, I could not have pulled it off.
