An organization dedicated to scholarship and the advancement of learning, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences was chartered in 1780 by leaders of the American Revolution with the goal to "cultivate every art and science which may tend to advance the interest, honour, dignity, and happiness of a free, independent, and virtuous people." The Academy now boasts some 4,000 members and several hundred honorary foreign members.
