Marshall D. Stern
"I believe it is essential to engage and motivate students while making the learning process fun so that students look forward to coming to every class."

Marshall Stern believes that interactive learning and using real-life demonstrations are effective ways to engage students. He offers the ultimate participatory classroom experience in his Companion Animal Nutrition and Care course by allowing students to bring their pets to class and discuss their care. He even videotapes each pet visit and creates a highlight film to show on the last day of class. It’s no wonder student evaluations consistently rank him in the top 3 percent of teachers at the University. The courses he teaches benefit from an immediate spike in enrollment, which one colleague has called "the Marshall effect."

As an exceptional teacher with a desire to serve undergraduates, Stern has devoted his energies to curriculum development. He pioneered the development of the companion animal emphasis in the Animal Science program. He integrates his internationally renowned cutting edge research into his undergraduate teaching and is committed to providing high quality laboratory research experiences to undergraduate students.

"Dr. Stern opened my eyes to a new world. A class that was only a few months in length turned into a lifetime of goals and rewards," says a former student.

His colleagues attest to the range and depth of his impact. "No matter where you look—advising, teaching, curriculum development, overall service to the students—you will find Dr. Stern leading the charge."
