In a milestone step in the construction of TCF Bank Stadium, the "topping-off" steel beams were placed atop of TCF Bank Stadium today. The beams were signed by workers and supporters, including members of the Alumni Associaiton Board of Directors.

Despite a rainy and gray morning, U and construction officials were in a jubilant mood, applauding as two workers bolted the beams into place atop the east scoreboard, more than 150 feet above the ground. The beams were among the final instamments of more than 8,800 tons of steel.

TCF Bank Stadium is being built with private donations, state bonding funds, student fees and U bonds to be covered by increased revenue expected from the new stadium. The first major gift was given by the Alumni Association -- $1 million shortly after plans were announced. Because of that, alumni officials were among those who signed the beams.

The stadium is on pace to open in September, 2009. In addition to Gopher football, the stadium will be home to the Minnesota Marching Band and major campus events.
