 | | The view of the Gateway Plaza will soon change with the addition of the Alumni Wall of Honor and Scholars Walk. |
- 1.1 acres of lawn.
- 110 native Minnesota evergreens and 178 native hardwoods, including quaking aspen, maple, and ash.
- 178,000 pavers in the Plaza and around the alumni center building.
- 7,000 cubic yards of new topsoil (enough to fill up 700 dump trucks).
- 33,000 gallons of water in the fountain (nearly as much as an Olympic swimming pool).
- 13,000 ground cover plants.
- On site of the old Memorial Stadium and, after its demolition, a 250-car parking lot (replaced by an adjacent 500-car ramp).
- The land is owned by the University; the plaza will be “returned” to the University as a “gift.”
- The Plaza and alumni center were designed by Antoine Predock, internationally known architect from Albuquerque, New Mexico. LHB Engineers of Minneapolis were architects of record.
- Cost of the Plaza area, fountains, stage, and other features was approximately $3 million. No tuition or University funds were used.
- The Plaza was designed and built using private sources of funding through the Gateway Corporation, a non-profit corporation comprised of representatives from the University of Minnesota Alumni Association, University of Minnesota Foundation, and Minnesota Medical Foundation.
- Larry Laukka is CEO and Fred Friswold is Director and Chairman of the Board of the Gateway Corporation. As volunteers and members of the class of 1958, they have been the driving forces behind both the Gateway Plaza and the McNamara Alumni Center.
