Enjoying some Texas style barbeque

Gopheropoly arrives at the Mesquite Championship Rodeo

It is August, and you are in Texas. So you know it has to be hot and humid. And being in Texas in the middle of summer, what better way to spend a Saturday evening than immersing yourself in the Texas

culture of a rodeo – in the air-conditioned Resistol Arena of the Mesquite Championship Rodeo to be specific.

The North Texas Chapter of the University of Minnesota Alumni Association traversed seventeen strong to the Mesquite Championship Rodeo to enjoy an excellent BBQ dinner that included brisket, sausage, cobbler, beverage and all the trimmings. While eating dinner in the Rodeo Pavilion, Chapter President Harald Mallwitz welcomed everyone to this unique event. Harald also made note that we were raffling off an impossible to get Gopheropoly (http://www.gopheropoly.com/) board game that was donated to us by the 2006-2007 Entrepreneurship in Action undergraduate students at the Carlson School of Management (http://www.carlsonschool.umn.edu/). Harald handed out a raffle ticket to everyone paying for the event. It was good to see soooo many new faces at this event.

Anyone for some Gopheropoly?

We all thank you Professor Seth E. Werner of the Carlson School of Management (http://www.carlsonschool.umn.edu/)., and student Jamie M. Miller for sending us this “token” board game and sponsoring the North Texas Chapter event.

The raffle was also made possible by the generous contribution of the Mesquite Championship Rodeo. Blake Buckley and the Mesquite Championship Rodeo (http://www.mesquiterodeo.com/) will be contributing $2.00 per attendee to the North Texas Chapter Endowed Scholarship for a total of $34.00. This Scholarship, once established, will help send a North Central Texas student to the University of Minnesota.

These Gophers look like Real Texans!

We all thank you Blake Buckley and the Mesquite Championship Rodeo (http://www.mesquiterodeo.com/) for your generosity and helping to sponsor this event.

After conducting the business part of the event, and awarding the Gopheropoly raffle prize, we adjourned to enjoy the rodeo. If you have never been to a Rodeo, this is really worth seeing. There was bull riding, calf roping, Cowgirl Barrel Racing, and Mutton Bustin’ (Youngsters don’t just watch the rodeo; they are part of it! Boys and girls will ride an actual sheep in the Justin Mutton Bustin’ event. Each boy and girl will be judged on how well they ride for six seconds and how well their wooly mount bucks), team roping, and saddle bronc riding to name a few.
