McNamara Alumni Center - University of Minnesota Gateway The McNamara Alumni Center, a striking structure clad in granite and copper, is a dream come true for the U of M, alumni, and friends. The building opened in February 2000, and creates a sense of arrival at a well-defined edge of campus (Oak Street and University Avenue). It also it provides information and a University heritage lesson.
Built on the site of the former Memorial Stadium, the Alumni Center preserves the memory of the stadium in Memorial Hall. There, the Memorial Stadium Arch is rebuilt in its full height. Passing through the arch leads to the Heritage Gallery--a place that preserves the tradition of excellence and innovation that has been the University's hallmark for almost 150 years. It is a place for the University to tell its story and to honor its finest teachers, researchers, alumni, artists, athletes, philanthropists, and leaders.
The McNamara Alumni Center was funded by alumni and friends to express their pride in the University. No tax money, tuition, or student fees were used to pay for the building.
