A Menu of Suggested Chapter Events

This is a list of suggested ideas for chapter events. It is not meant to be inclusive all the events that a chapter can sponsor. It s merely intended to stimulate ideas for creative and festive chapter events. For chapters enrolled in the Alumni Association Honor Chapter Program, each event that a chapter sponsors is worth 10 points.

Event ideas—

• TV watch party at a sports bar / hotel / home to watch a U of M game or event
• Dinner / luncheon / breakfast / reception with a U of M program. Program topics are exhaustive but some suggestions include:
• • University or college administrator
  • Faculty member or researcher
  • Athletic department official or coach
  • Musical group
  • Theatrical group
  • Sports event
  • Local U of M alumni celebrities or community leaders
  • Students
• Networking / social event without a program
• Chapter outings to community events and attractions (pro sports, theater, museum, zoo, concert, etc.)
• Attend a U of M event as a chapter outing

Alumni Association Promotion Assistance

To help chapters promote events, the Alumni Association uses the US mail service and the Internet.

Invitations The Alumni Association will design, print and send invitations for chapter events according to its policy as stated in chapter manual.

Internet The Alumni Association will provide a page for each chapter on its Web site to advertise chapter events and chapter contact information.

To add spirit to chapter events, consider the following ideas:

Activity Kits The Alumni Association will provide each chapter with an activity kit that includes decorations, give away items and door prizes to stimulate the Gopher spirit. Chapters need to order activity kits at least three weeks prior to the event to assure delivery before the event.

Gopher Gear Sales Through a special arrangement with the University of Minnesota Bookstore chapters may order merchandise for selling at a chapter event and then return the unsold merchandise. On orders of $500 to $1500 chapters retain 20% of the suggested retail price and 30% on orders of $1500 and above. Donated items for fundraising raffles are also available from the Bookstore.  Heritage Embroidery, Stillwater, MN gives chapters a 40% rebate on merchandise sold at chapter events.

Goldy Mascot In some instances, the Alumni Association can provide a goldy costume for a chapter event.
