Admitted and Prospective University of Minnesota Students Meet in the North Texas Chapter Area

It was February 16, 2008 and the University of Minnesota Office of Admissions along with the University of Minnesota Alumni Association, North Texas Chapter welcomed 14 admitted and prospective students. The seven high school seniors and seven high school juniors – along with their families - met in the North Texas Chapter area with the Office of Admissions and North Texas Chapter Alumni. Desiree Keenan from the Office of Admissions gave a power point presentation to our guests that blew their socks off. Some of the highlights of Desiree’s presentation included the vast number of undergraduate majors available, the various admitting schools within the University of Minnesota, scholarships, financing, and tuition to name a few. Roughly ten North Texas Chapter Alumni sat in on Desiree’s presentation to the students and their parents. All said and done, about forty-five people were there at this second ever event in the North Texas Chapter.

Being very prepared as usual, Desiree had folders for each admitted and prospective student, chalk full with information on the University of Minnesota. Desiree also brought back-sacks for each high-school student with University of Minnesota goodies inside.

Following Desiree’s presentation, we broke out into one-on-one mingling. This gave the students and families the chance to ask some very astute questions, and to also check out the alumni. The afternoon was capped off with a drawing of door prizes consisting of what else but University of Minnesota accoutrements.

Desiree Keenan from the Office of Admissions notes that at the reception, we spoke with sophomores, juniors and seven admitted seniors who had a strong interest in the University

of Minnesota
!  Everyone, parents and students alike, had wonderful questions and comments regarding the U of M. We are so grateful to have had the opportunity to bring a little bit of the U of M, and a lot of Gopher spirit, to North Texas!

One big item that Desiree spoke about is that nonresident tuition to the U of M will be dropping significantly!  Beginning in the fall of 2008, nonresident tuition will cost just $2,000 more each semester than Minnesota resident tuition.  This is a deduction of more than $7,500 off of the 07-08 nonresident rate!  Also, all of our national students are reviewed for wonderful National Scholarships, which could bring their cost down to the same as an in state resident.  This is extremely exciting for all of our Texas students.

The North Texas Chapter and the University of Minnesota Office of Admissions naturally want to thank Jan Rollow, D.D.S. and her husband Larry for opening their house for this reception. This is the second year that alumna Dr. Rollow and her husband have hosted the event.
