Alumni Interest Group Criteria
ASSUMPTIONS

Alumni Interest Groups:
  • connect alumni and friends to the University and the University of Minnesota
    Alumni Association;
  • support the mission, goals, and objectives of the Alumni Association;
  • help increase membership in the group and the Alumni Association; and
  • are financially self-sustaining and do not receive direct staff support from the Alumni Association.

    PROCESS

    A group applying for Alumni Association alumni interest group status must meet the following criteria:
  • include at least 25 paid Alumni Association members who support alumni interest group status, at least
    five of whom are willing to assume group leadership responsibility, and
  • obtain endorsement from on-campus department, program, organization, or unit which would benefit from, and collaborate with the alumni interest group.

    When these criteria have been met, the group will submit a written petition requesting alumni interest group status to the Alumni Association Programs Committee for review and recommendation to the Alumni Association National Board. The petition will include:
  • names of those assuming leadership responsibility;
  • names and written signatures of UMAA members in the group supporting the alumni interest group status;
  • definition of the group; initial and projected group size;
  • proposed governance structure;
  • a mission statement, and an activities/financial plan that includes at least one event; and
  • one project that supports the University and Alumni Association goals and objectives.

    After alumni interest group status is granted:
  • the group will be chartered by the Alumni Association;
  • an Alumni Association alumni officer may attend alumni interest group meetings and serve as a liaison between the group and the Alumni Association for information-sharing purposes;
  • the group will submit programming and financial plans for annual review by the Alumni Association Programs Committee;
  • the group will not charge separate membership dues; each group will develop and implement alternative funding strategies, i.e. company sponsorship, event fees, assistance from endorsing University department or unit; and
  • the Alumni Association will provide the group with Alumni Association membership materials and a yearly report of alumni interest group members.
