National Academies
Four organizations--the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering, the Institute of Medicine, and the National Research Council (NRC)--comprise the United States National Academies. (The NRC is composed of members of the other bodies.) The National Academies are "advisers to the nation on science, engineering, and medicine," enlisting the nation’s foremost scientists, engineers, health professionals, and other experts to address the scientific and technical aspects of some of society’s most pressing problems.
